Form Engine

Define data and interface using business models: forms, lists, details, and validation rules are modeled once — configurable by business staff, implementable in practice

Engine Positioning

The form engine is the "data interface" carrier for business objects on the platform. By defining fields, associations, validations, and list views through a model, and then mapping them to input forms, query lists, and detail pages, SRM orders, QMS exception forms, and MES reporting pages no longer need to have their front end written from scratch. The design-time agent can assist in generating and adjusting form objects, but the final reference remains the real configuration that can continue to be modified in the designer.

The complexity of manufacturing forms lies in branch validation, master-sub tables, master data components such as selecting people/departments/materials, and linkage with workflows and permissions. The form engine shares the underlying platform with the organization, permissions, and workflow engines, ensuring consistency in 'who fills what and submits what for approval within what scope,' and reserving field-level translation space for multilingual operation.

Where It Fits

  • Business documents rely on Excel or scattered pages, with inconsistent field standards. Statistics have to be manually cleaned, and meetings to align standards are repeatedly held.
  • The master table, validations, and linkage logic are scattered throughout the code, so even minor changes require a release, and business rule iterations can't keep up with on-site needs.
  • Separate sets are written for selecting people, departments, and material components. The master data is inconsistent, and the same person does not match across different documents.
  • The same business has a fragmented experience between PC and on-site terminals, and the rules cannot be reused, leading the scanning terminal to create a separate 'simplified version' system.
  • In a multilingual runtime, the interface copy and business dictionary lack a unified replacement point, so going overseas can only involve copying pages or giving up translation.

Capability Highlights

  • Business modelEntities, field types, associations, and constraints are centrally defined, serving as a common source for forms, lists, interfaces, and report data retrieval. Once field definitions are modeled, statistics no longer require manual cleaning.
  • Form DesignInput layouts, grouping, visibility, and validation can be configured, supporting manufacturing document structures such as main and sub-tables. Minor rule adjustments are published directly in the designer, rather than scheduling a release for each change through development.
  • Lists and QueriesQuery conditions, column display, sorting, and export are linked with the scope of data permissions. The rows that can be seen are within the authorized range, and exporting does not become a leak or an unauthorized bypass.
  • Master Data ComponentThe personnel, department, position, role, and business object selection components uniformly consume organizational and business master data, eliminating the fragmentation of master data caused by each module building its own dropdowns.
  • Linked with the processForm submission can trigger or drive processes; nodes can impose constraints such as read-only or required on fields, allowing the same set of configurations for approval and data entry rules, ensuring the state machine does not conflict.
  • Multilingual ReadyThe interface and dictionary copy can be replaced according to the tenant's language, with the original text as a fallback for missing translations. In overseas and multi-base scenarios, forms do not need to have a separate page copy for each language.

Works With Other Engines

Organization Engine

The components for selecting people/departments/positions directly consume the organization's master data. After a change in appointment, the options and scope are automatically reflected without needing to modify the form code.

Permission Engine

The list row range and field/button access are bound at form runtime; export and API calls are similarly restricted and do not constitute an unauthorized bypass.

Workflow Engine

Submit triggers the process; the node's required/readonly fields are consistent with the form rules to avoid 'the process is approved but the document is still a draft'.

Dual Agents

Design-time can help generate and adjust form objects. Results must enter the designer for review before publish. Runtime creates form data through the form business API, sharing validation and permissions with on-screen entry.

Promotion and Acceptance

  • Select three types of high-frequency documents: create, change, void/close, and verify whether the validation, permissions, and process triggers are consistent
  • The performance of master table saving and list loading is acceptable; changes to key fields are traceable or can be traced back to versions.
  • When reusing the same model objects with products such as QMS/SRM/MES, the meaning and units of the fields are consistent between the documentation and the interface
  • Forms/lists generated by design-time agents can continue to be edited and rolled back in the designer, without overwriting unpublished versions.
  • After rejection/withdrawal, the editable range of fields is consistent with the workflow node configuration, and bypassing on the interface side is prohibited.
  • Exported columns remain consistent with visible columns in the list under permission rules
  • The model release notice is copied to the person in charge of integration and the person responsible for report standards, with an attached list of changed fields and status enumerations.

Implement in stages

  • Phase One: Core object modeling, state machines, organizational components, lists, and validation baseline
  • Phase II: Process integration, permission field rules, master-detail tables and versioning strategy
  • Phase Three: Cross-product reusable objects, design-phase agents in-the-loop release, report data retrieval joint debugging

Create a landing prompt

IQC records, purchase order lines, work reporting details, and inspection item sub-tables are high-frequency modeling objects: field units (pcs/KG/m), batch/serial numbers, and organizational dimensions should be defined once at the model layer. When interfacing with ERP, avoid duplicating a set of material descriptions on the form side; selecting material components should consume master data. The default list filter should link by plant/warehouse organization to reduce configuration errors of "seeing all group-level rows".

When not to apply

  • Use a form engine to handle complex cross-system orchestration—long-chain collaboration should combine process and integration engines
  • No model governance, allowing arbitrary field additions on site — naming and master data ownership rules should come first
  • Alternative to professional CAD/PLM structure BOM — the form is suitable for business documents and does not carry the native capabilities of CAD
  • Use Excel import as the long-term main channel — importing should be used for initialization, and during runtime it should revert to system entry and interfaces.
